Screen Reader

Screen readers are tools used by people with vision and reading impairments. Some individuals with low vision will use a screen reader along with a zoomed in view of their screen. Those with reading impairments, such as people with Dyslexia, use them to speed up their reading process.

Screen readers may behave differently based on their DOM models. So, an application – especially a public facing application – should be tested by all the browsers listed below, and in multiple browsers.

Licensed

  • JAWS (Job Access with Speech) is a screen reader still popular with about one third of people with vision impairment. This tool is a licensed product offered by Freedom Scientific.

Browser Free Downloads

  • NVDA is another popular screen reader and a free download, offered by Firefox. NVDA works with Firefox or Google Chrome browsers.
  • Voice Over is the next popular screen reader offered by Safari browser. Voice Over also works with Google Chrome on a Mac.
  • Chrome Vox is a screen reader offered by Google Chrome.

Mobile

  • Talkback is the screen reader available on Android and Galaxy phones.
  • Voice Over is the screen reader available on iPhones.
